Location
Kithore is comparatively a big town situated 28 Km. away from district head quarter Meerut. River Ganga, one of the largest rivers of country passes through the area.
In the geographic terms Kithore can be located on latitude 28.8638094 and Longitude 77.938936. A branch of GT road runs from Meerut – Kithore – Garhmukteshwar state highway and another joins from Mawana to Hapur.
Demographic Details
As mentioned earlier Kithore is situated in a remote area of Meerut district. Local people estimates that currently the Town and its surrounding population is of around 50,000 persons according to 2011-12 census of India. The Town and its surrounding population of 50,000 have 20516 males and 17836.
The figures of the latest census make it evident that child population (0-17) in the district has been 16% of the overall population. In the absence of official data for the Town, it can be guessed here that child population in the Town would be 10,000 if calculated at current rate. It should be noted that male/ female ration is tilted in the favour of first one.
So long as the Muslim population is the concerned as a thumping population of the community with around 90 % of the local populace has faith in Islam. They all belong to the Sunni stream and generally observe various rites and rituals of Islam with interest.
There is a small population of Scheduled Caste people and higher caste Hindus.
Social Scene
Local people are highly poor. Mostly they are engaged in general or agriculture labour. Thus, they are dangerously put up in highly unorganized lowly paid occupations. There are over 1529 families below the poverty line and condition of other families is also not good.
The lands occupied by the local people are not good enough, both by measure and quality to give satisfactory returns on the agriculture toil. Therefore most people are engaged in labour work in the town and nearby towns and in sugar plantations in other parts of state. They could hardly have both the ends meet.
Elderly people of the town are mostly illiterate and can hardly plan there worldly affairs in a better way. However Jamat-e-Islami Hind and its student wing SIO have local branches and through them on the one hand moral and spiritual life of the people got immensely elevated and on the other the educational awareness in the younger generation is getting momentum. Consequently in spite of the fact that no proper school is working in the town for educating children, it’s literacy rate is guessed to be over 50%. This has been achieved by the local community by sending their children to other places for education by investing hard earned money on their wards. The children go to their schools walking since their parents can’t afford even a bicycle for them, although a few of them surely enjoy the privilege of being cycle riders. It’s really pathetic that local children are forced to complete their education beyond Senior Level in nearby towns and cities. Just it can be imagined how the tender bodies of those children who are going early in the morning to their schools amidst the vagaries of rainy winter and summer seasons are challenged to carry on their educational pursuit. Perhaps, this is the reason that 55 % of the local children, mostly girls, drop out after completing primary education.
As per the records if district administration, literacy rate of minorities is 45.61 while national literacy rate is 67.47, rate of female literacy is 54.81 while national rate is 57.1. Given below is the table according of GOI Census
Average Literacy rate across Rural, Urban, Male, Female and Religious Categories in the District and the State Categories | Meerut | Uttar Pradesh
Total | 64.80% | 56.30% | ||||
Rural | 62.67% | 52.50% | ||||
Urban | 66.97% | 69.70% | ||||
Male | 75.00% | 68.80% | ||||
Female | 53.12% | 42.20% | ||||
Hindus | 73.14% | 57.00% | ||||
Muslims | 45.65% | 48.00% | ||||
Christians | 82.36% | 72.48%
Sikhs | 75.29% | 71.95% | ||||
Buddhists | 72.48% | 57.00%
Jains | 94.93% | 93.20% |
Why does educational level of people decrease with the increase in the level of education? It is because of multiple socio-economic and cultural factors. One of the important factors of this trend is availability of educational infrastructure or access to education. We find district Meerut lagging behind state average in this regard.
Number of Educational Institutions per One Lakh Population in the District and the State Items | Meerut | Uttar Pradesh |
Number of Primary Schools per Lakh of population | 63.1 | 78.0 |
Number of Secondary Schools per Lakh of population | 8.0 | 22.0 |
Number of Higher Secondary Schools per Lakh of population | 8.0 | 8.0 |
Number of Degree Colleges per Lakh of Population | 0.1 | 0.86 |
Literacy rate is one indicator of the educational scene but it only crudely reveals the state of a nation or a community. There are other indicators to be taken in to consideration such as enrolment rate, completion rates at primary, upper primary, secondary, senior secondary and graduation levels and the institution available per unit of population. In the absence of specific data for the district in general and Muslims of this minority concentrated area may be seen above. As said herein above that 55 % of children of the town dropout after completing their primary education due to the issues of poverty, transportation and safety of boys and girls going to distant schools. This immensely reduces the number of Muslim students of the town at higher levels of education.
Educational Needs
The forgoing passage make it evident that the specific educational requirements which needs to be fulfilled for carving a better educational and economic future of kithore and nearby villages. Already government primary school is functioning in the town but quality of education imparted in its premises is below satisfactory level.
All India Education Society (AIES) also providing additional private service to the town children, however it requires huge input for accommodating the increasing numbers of children and meeting out the quality standard. There is one more Maktab in the town but that it’s running without any planning and sincere ability and only a few students joins it. As before pointed out that child and adolescent population is around 18500 that means there will be additional 1500 students every year who would require facilities for their proper education. Even if be utility of the government run primary and junior school we can’t be denied specially in the absence of any alternative, more than half of these children will require private initiative for their better future.
Moreover, there is a high dropout rate of local students after completing primary level of education. This is issue can be met only by increasing the existent facility and creating the new one.
It’s required that the present spree of parents to send their ward to school and colleges in increasing number should be maintained by concerted efforts. If be on going activities in this regards gets slackened then it will cause a serious dent on the educational attainment of the children of kithore and nearby villages.
The management has resolved to float project for the future needs of the institution so that a larger philanthropic community could be involved in the generation of required resources. The management has decided that a part of the required funds would be mobilized from local people and nearby associates; however, a bulk of the entire expenditure would be required from some philanthropic person or agency’s one time grant.
